About the Project

The Stung-Tasal Dam, a Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam, is the first of its kind in Cambodia built by state-of-the-art technical expertise. The project was executed during 2011 – 2014 period.
The Stung Tasal Dam Project was envisaged to store 147 MCM water in Stung Tasal river reservoir to provide water security and to increase cropping intensity as well irrigation intensity in its command.
While the Cambodian Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MOWRAM) was the project owner, WAPCOS (A Govt. of India enterprise) was the owner’s consultant. DMR was appointed by Angelique International Limited as its design and project management consultant.

DMR Assignment

The broad scope of work for DMR was to plan, design, and provide technical assistance in project execution for the following project components:

A 21 m high rockfill dam with upstream concrete facing
A low-level gated spillway with three bays (fitted with radial gates) with a crest at riverbed level located in the central portion of the river along with the provision of 4 m thick and 10.7 m high breast walls.
An ungated auxiliary surface spillway on the left bank with a crest at EL.107.2 m and 30 m crest length
Three irrigation sluices each 1 m x 2 m at the bottom (EL.94.20 m)

Challenges

Lack of skilled resources in Cambodia particularly for CFRD dam and radial gates
The remoteness of the project location resulting in logistics issues
Chances of getting the irrigation sluices choked in due course of time.
Language barrier with Locals

Value added by DMR

The design of the dam was proposed by DMR as concrete-face rockfill dams – CFRD type in place of conventional central clay core type to overcome serious technical challenges due to the presence of dispersive soils at the dam site. This resulted in the technical viability of the project.
Knowledge of CFRD dam technology was imparted by DMR specialists to the engineers of WAPCOS, Angelique, and local Cambodian engineers.
The innovative design of the low-level spillway ensured the long-term life of the reservoir.
The innovative auxiliary spillway added to the dam’s safety.
