About the Project

Gaj III SHP is a run of the river scheme on the Gaj Khad, a right-bank tributary of the Beas River. The scheme concluded the diversion of Gaj Khad inflows by constructing a diversion weir. The diverted inflow is carried through the intake channel to a surface desilting tank, which was designed to exclude all silt particles down to 0.20 mm in size. The silt-free water is carried through 1.35m dia. Mild Steel Pipe to a surface forebay from where flows shall be fed to surface Powerhouse through a surface penstock to feed two nos. Pelton turbine-driven generating units of 2.50 MW each.

DMR Assignment

DMR was entrusted with the complete scope of DPR Review, Tender Engineering, Construction Stage Planning, and detailed Design & Drawings for all components including modification of designs as per site conditions up to successful commissioning.

Challenges

Rugged design of a Trench weir located in steeply flowing nallah with a movable boulder bed.
Setting out of the alignment of the Water Conductor system which encountered various Nallahs along the way.
Setting out of the longitudinal profile of the penstock through steep bouldery terrain.
Planning and Design of Surface Powerhouse at the site with unfavorable topography.

Value added by DMR

DMR led the design front by going over and above its scope to drive the project. The design and engineering of various components were revised and optimized to suit the site conditions. This reduced the overall project cost and improved the ease of construction for the executing agency.

The project had been successfully commissioned during 2019 while negotiating major challenges during execution owing to the proactive & agile site execution team and engineering competencies of DMR. The project has been an exception to the industry performance in the development of Small Hydro projects which usually suffer from time and cost overruns.
