DMR Assignment

OM Infra collaborated with DMR to assist them in the Rehabilitation of Penstocks (Partly Underground and partly surface) of the Kameng Hydro Electric Project (600 MW) located in Arunachal Pradesh, India. The Penstocks erected during the 2004 – 2018 period had developed leakages and needed rehabilitation urgently. Due to access and technological constraints, the project faced major bottlenecks which were removed through continuous innovation and strenuous efforts.

DMR’s team of 23 specialized personnel was mobilized for the restoration of Penstocks.
A thoroughly researched plan of action was formulated after careful analysis of executed Designs and modifications required for works was suggested.
Rectification methodology for joint offsets was developed after thorough deliberation and modern analytical tools.
Continuous monitoring of Quality of welding operations was performed (Pre-UT inspections, supervision during welding, post-UT inspection, etc.).

Challenges

Identifications of Material of Weld and Plates had to be carried out to identify the material composition of plates and welds using in-situ methods and lab testing of samples.
Ultrasonic Testing of large diameter Ferrules
Rectification of bulge in ferrules
Ingress of water through the opened joints was making it tough to initiate specific Rectification of weld joints and grout plugs.
Access to the underground portion of the penstocks was highly restrictive.
Accumulation of fumes due to welding and grinding inside the penstocks during rectification.

DMR took the initiative to develop a specialized rectification procedure for weld joints, surface indentation, offsets, and bulge in ferrules. Continuous on-site monitoring of the work by DMR helped in optimizing the supply chain and quality control processes. DMR provided leadership in integrating the efforts of different participants to achieve the project objectives under tight deadlines. The combined efforts of all stakeholders brought the project to final commissioning and power generation of 600 MW.
